A credential evaluation can be a crucial part of the F1 student visa process, helping students demonstrate their eligibility and intent to study in the U.S. Here’s how it can help:

Prove Program Eligibility

A credential evaluation validates the academic work a student has completed in their home country and provides the U.S. equivalency of their degree. This ensures the student receives proper credit for their education and can include a course-by-course breakdown of credits and grades earned. It also provides information about the institution the student attended, confirming that the student qualifies for the program they have been admitted to. This can clear up any confusion for consular officers who may not be familiar with foreign educational systemsEstablish the Intent to Study

During the F1 visa interview, it’s important to demonstrate a clear career pathway. A credential evaluation report can show previous coursework related to the student’s intended program, proving their legitimate interest in continuing their education. It also shows that the student has taken their desire to study in the U.S. seriously by investing in a credential evaluation report.Demonstrate Non-Immigrant Career Goals

Students must also prove their non-immigrant intent by showing strong ties to their home country. A credential evaluation report can help articulate the student’s intended career, what they have accomplished so far, and how their intended program of study in the U.S. aligns with their career goals. If a student has job offers contingent upon completing their U.S. degree, they should bring that documentation to their interview.

Unlock Further Opportunities

After obtaining an F1 visa and completing their studies, a credential evaluation report can continue to be beneficial. It can help students secure internships as part of Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) employment authorization. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services updated its policy guidance in August of 2024 regarding when students may be eligible for optional practical training (OPT) for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The Policy Update also clarifies guidance concerning online study, school transfers, the grace period, and study abroad. It also boosts their resume by establishing their previous education and skill set, which can be crucial for job offers that may lead to visa sponsorship, such as through the H-1B visa.

F1 Student Visa Overview

The F1 visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows international students to enter the U.S. to study at an accredited institution. To qualify, students must:

  • Be enrolled in an academic program, language-training program, or vocational program.
  • Attend a school approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student.
  • Be proficient in English or enrolled in courses leading to English proficiency.
  • Have sufficient funds for self-support during their studies.
  • Maintain a residence abroad with no intention of abandoning it.

Set Students Up for Success

The F1 visa requires students to prove their intention to study in the U.S. and then return to their home country. A credential evaluation report shows a student’s serious intention in studying, documents their desired career path, and provides clarity to consular officers reviewing their academic history. Including a credential evaluation report as part of the onboarding process can set students up for success in their F1 visa application.
